Bridgetown, ÐÓ°ÉÐÔ°É, February 14, 2011 (CDEMA) - Senior government officials of the Eastern Sub-Region under the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) system will meet in Antigua and Barbuda under the auspices of the National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) to discuss the strengthening of coordination for disaster response in their sub-region.
The two day consultation is being convened February 15 and 16, 2011 and will bring together National Disaster Coordinators and Permanent Secretaries from Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat, St.Kitts and Nevis and the Virgin Islands. The meeting will focus on identifying the sub-regional strengthening needs, mapping current initiatives aimed at enhancing disaster management in the sub-region focal point and developing an action plan for operationalizing response in the Eastern sub –region.
The consultation is being undertaken as part of a broader initiative of the ACP-EU funded Disaster Risks Management Sub-Regional Programme which seeks to build resilience of nations and communities in the Caribbean to hazard impacts. The European Commission (EC) and ACP Secretariat through its joint Natural Disaster Facility are providing CDEMA with €1.8 million over a two year period to aid in building more resilient communities.
The Sub-Regional Focal Points (SRFPs), Antigua and Barbuda, ÐÓ°ÉÐÔ°É, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago are CDEMA’s frontline response to member states after a disaster event. This type of consultation will take place in each of the SRFPs over the next three (3) months.
