MESSAGE: Tropical Storm Matthew forms in the Eastern Caribbean

THE SITUATION:

At 11:00 AM (EST), Wednesday September 28, 2016, the tropical disturbance that has been approaching the Eastern Caribbean was upgraded to a Tropical Storm. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Miami, Florida, Tropical Storm Mathew, the 13th named storm of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season, was formed near the Windward Islands and has acquired a closed circulation. It was centered at 11 a.m. AST about 35 miles (55 km) southeast of Saint. Lucia. Maximum sustained winds were near 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening during the next couple of days is forecast, and Matthew could become a hurricane by Friday.

THE SITUATION:

According to the latest advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Miami, Florida, At 8:00 AM EDT, Tuesday September 2016, an Atlantic Ocean tropical wave located about 475 miles east-southeast of ÐÓ°ÉÐÔ°É continues to become more organised and is likely that a tropical depression or a tropical storm may form or tonight. Environmental conditions are favorable for continued development, while the system moves westward to west- northwestward at 15 to 20 mph. Interests in the eastern and central Caribbean Sea, including the northern coast of South America, should monitor the progress of this disturbance, since warnings and watches could be required at any time. Regardless of whether the system is a tropical wave or tropical cyclone, heavy rains and wind gusts to tropical storm force are expected to spread over the Windward Islands and portions of the southern Lesser Antilles, beginning tonight and continuing into Wednesday.

Bridgetown, ÐÓ°ÉÐÔ°É, September 27th, 2016 – As a number of the Participating States of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) brace for the pending impact of a tropical weather system, the Agency has once again taken the lead to coordinate the Regional Response Mechanism (RRM). To this end, CDEMA in collaboration with the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) convened a pre-strike meeting of the Eastern Caribbean Development Partner Group (ECDPG) at 12:00 noon today, Tuesday September 27, 2016, to plan for possible scenarios in preparation for the impact. Partner agencies who are members of this group including regional and international donors and development partners are monitoring the system.
