Bridgetown, Ӱ, October 10, 2024 - The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency’s (CDEMA) Regional Coordination Plan was activated on Tuesday, October 8th, 2024 at 11.00 AM, in accordance with established emergency protocols.
The action was taken in response to an anticipated impact of Hurricane Milton on the northwestern areas of the Bahamas, to support the monitoring and regional preparations for the Participating State.
The Government of the Bahamas had issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the extreme northwestern Bahamas, made up of Grand Bahama Island, Abacos, Bimini, adjacent Cays and surrounding waters at 11:00 AM on Tuesday October 8, 2024. This was subsequently upgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning at 5:00PM that afternoon for those family islands and this remains in effect.
There were reports from the Disaster Risk Management Authority (DRMA) of localized flooding and the Ministry of Education has announced school closures in the northwestern Bahama Islands which are under threat from October 7 to 10, 2024. No requests for assistance were received from the Participating State at this time.
The CDEMA Coordinating Unit (CU) initiated several preparedness actions, including convening the Caribbean Development Partners Group (CDPG) Meeting on Wednesday, 09th, October, 2024, at one (1) PM, co-chaired by CDEMA’s Executive Director, Ms. Elizabeth Riley, and Humanitarian Affairs Officer with OCHA’s Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (ROLAC), Ms. Carol Sanchez
CDEMA has also established communication and remains in contact with the Disaster Risk Management Authority (DRMA), as well as the sub-regional focal point, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) in Jamaica. The Regional Response Mechanism (RRM) has also been placed on ALERT and will continue to monitor the developments of Hurricane Milton.
The CDEMA Coordinating Unit continues to provide updates to Dr. Carla Natalie Barnett, CARICOM Secretary General, and Dr. The Hon. Ralph E. Gonsalves, Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and current Chair of CDEMA.
Partner agencies of the Regional Response Mechanism (RRM) have advised that they continue to monitor the system and are ready to provide the required support.
