Bridgetown, ÐÓ°ÉÐÔ°É , October 1st, 2017 (CDEMA) - As the CARICOM Disaster Relief Unit (CDRU) prepares to exit the Virgin Islands (UK) some rehabilitative work was done on the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School in Baugher’s Bay. The remaining 14 member team, led by Lt Commander Graham Rocheford (ÐÓ°ÉÐÔ°É Defence Force) re-painted the bathroom facilities for boys and girls and fixed the urinals and toilets that were damaged as a result of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

The CDRU was housed at the school following the passage of Hurricane Irma and later during Hurricane Maria. The Unit was an initial 22-man team with disciplined forces coming from ÐÓ°ÉÐÔ°É, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, St Kitts and Nevis and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
The CDRU was activated and deployed via the Regional Security System (RSS) as part of the Regional Response Mechanism (RRM) coordinated by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA).
Their primary role is to intercept and coordinate disaster relief with the National Disaster Management Offices. The team stayed and worked closely with the Department of Disaster Management based in Tortola for the period September 10 till September 30, 2017.
