Bridgetown, ÐÓ°ÉÐÔ°É Thursday November 18, 2010 (CDEMA) – CDEMA and the Department of Disaster Management in the Virgin Islands are hosting a National Consultation for the Adaptation of Model Disaster Legislation and Regulations on Friday November 19, 2010.
This is the next step for the Virgin Islands in the adaptation process for disaster legislation previously developed and now revised by CDEMA under the Institutional Support and Capacity Building for Disaster Management in the Caribbean Project.
The consultation follows a regional forum on disaster management legislation held in September, 2010. At that forum stakeholders and technical experts reviewed critical tools and procedures for the implementation of the revised Model Disaster Management Legislation.
National adaptation will address existing weaknesses in disaster management legislation in CDEMA’s Participating States following a comprehensive review of regional legislation. The activities will update and strengthen enforcement and more intimately link disaster legislation with the enhanced Comprehensive Disaster Management Framework.
The enhanced CDM Framework emphasizes disaster loss reduction through risk management and aims to strengthen capacities regionally for the mitigation, management, and coordinated response to all hazards, and the effects of climate change. The environment and capacity of the Virgin Islands (UK) one of CDEMA’s Participating States for risk mitigation will be strengthened by the outputs of this activity.
The EDF project is a €3.4 million program funded by the European Union (EU). The project is in its third year of implementation and is aimed at increasing the Agency’s capability to coordinate and lead disaster management in the region.
