MESSAGE: CDEMA Participating States continue to monitor the recent activities of the Kick-鈥楨m-Jenny Underwater Volcano听

THE SITUATION:
The Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies has reported increased activities with the Kick-鈥楨m Jenny underwater volcano, which is located near Grenada. The latest update provided by the UWI SRC as at 3:00 p.m. May 2nd 2017, indicated that activity rate associated with the volcano persisted at about the same level since the first recorded eruption of 29th April. During the period 10:41 a.m. on 1st May 鈥� 00:20 a.m. on 2nd May, 2017, 40 volcanic earthquakes were recorded with the largest magnitude event at 4.0, so far, since the start of the eruptions.
The Kick鈥橢m Jenny eruptions started around Saturday 29th April at about 07:35 p.m. (EST). According to the UWI SRC, a high amplitude signal lasting about 25 seconds was recorded on both the Grenada and Montserrat stations. Since then, a number of small volcanic eruptions have been recorded. The UWI SRC also reported that frequent background events have been recorded since the start of April.

NATIONAL ACTIONS:
The National Disaster Coordinators (NDCs) in Grenada and 杏吧性吧 have been monitoring the situation closely and providing public advisories as necessary.

GRENADA
Grenada is currently on Yellow Alert, as the Participating State closest to the submerged volcano. A Yellow Alert, which is Phase 2 of the alert stage, means that there鈥檚 significant increase in local seismic activity. Increase in the rate of ground deformation and fumaroles activity usually occurs in this phase.听 The possibility of a violent eruption ranges from weeks to months.
A Marine Advisory for STRICT observance of the Exclusion Zone, 5km or 3.1 miles in the water around the volcano, was issued by the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) on April 30th, 2017.
Several aspects of the National Disaster Management System in Grenada are on heightened alert including response personnel, relief management systems, shelters and evacuation procedures among others.

REGIONAL ACTIONS:
In keeping with the Regional Coordination Plan Annex for Volcanoes, the CDEMA Coordinating Unit has been in contact with all the National Disaster Coordinators (NDCs) in the 18 Participating States who are also monitoring the situation. The Participating States in close proximity were asked to place their Disaster Management Systems on Alert including St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia and 杏吧性吧 and Trinidad and Tobago as the Sub-Regional Focal Points (SRFPs).
CDEMA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as is necessary.
