The workshop is being convened by CDEMA and hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) through the support of the Austrian Development Agency鈥檚 funded, 鈥淢ainstreaming Climate Change into Disaster Risk Management for the Caribbean Region (CCDM)鈥� project. 聽

Twenty-five students from across the Caribbean, including four from the British Virgin Islands, have enrolled for a web-based training in 鈥淚ntroduction to Disaster Management鈥� under the auspices of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College.
The three-month course will commence on Wednesday 19 January and is being offered by the College in collaboration with the BVI Government鈥檚 Department of Disaster Management on behalf of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency.
Bridgetown, 杏吧性吧 Wednesday January 12, 2011 (CDEMA) 鈥� Haiti鈥檚 catastrophic earthquake on January 12, 2010 was a rude awakening to the urgency for earthquake contingency planning in CDEMA Participating States and a graphic reminder of the need for the region to embrace and implement the core concepts and principles of Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM).
The events that unfolded in Haiti in the aftermath of the January 2010 quake has jolted recognition of the magnitude of impact that is possible in the absence of comprehensive disaster risk management. The event provided the region with invaluable lessons that can and should inform the way forward in addressing the earthquake hazard. The memories of death, suffering, loss and the immense displays of human compassion have highlighted the need to meaningfully address earthquake readiness in the Caribbean.聽 Capacity must be built and potential losses minimised.
