Hurricane Erin remains a powerful major hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 125 mph and is forecast to strengthen slightly as it turns northward over the next 48–72 hours. The system has expanded considerably, with tropical-storm-force winds extending up to 175 miles (280 km) from the center and hurricane-force winds up to 45 miles (75 km). The hurricane is expected to pass near the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas, placing these areas at the highest risk. Tropical storm conditions are expected from Sunday night through Tuesday, accompanied by damaging gusts, heavy rainfall of 4–6 inches (locally up to 8 inches), flash flooding, landslides, and coastal inundation. Surge levels of 2–4 feet above normal tide levels are possible in low-lying coastal areas.
